Job Description
Join us at Zendesk, where we're on a mission to power exceptional service for every person on the planet. We're accelerating that ambition by building products rooted in AI, automation, and intelligent customer experiences, because behind every interaction lies an opportunity to make a human connection.
We’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Workforce Management product team - Zendesk’s AI-powered solution for forecasting, scheduling, and agent performance tracking. In this role you’ll design and deliver scalable backend systems that power features used by thousands of customers and millions of end users, helping organizations optimize workforce efficiency through reliable, data-driven automation.
You will play a critical role in shaping the operational excellence of our WFM backend - developing our codebase, taking part in implementation decisions, mentoring engineers, and ensuring our services remain fast, resilient, and maintainable at scale.
What you’ll be doing
Design, implement, test, and maintain backend services in Go that power Workforce Management features used by customers at scale.
Own components through the full SDLC: participate in discovery, estimate and plan work, deliver features, and support them in production.
Collaborate closely with product managers, SREs, QA, and other engineers to translate requirements into reliable, maintainable solutions.
Write clear, well-tested code and perform thoughtful code reviews that raise team quality and share knowledge.
Help identify and reduce technical debt by breaking complex problems into manageable tasks and proposing pragmatic improvements.
Monitor and troubleshoot production issues, improve observability, and contribute to incident response and postmortems.
Mentor and coach more junior engineers, share best practices, and contribute to a positive, inclusive team culture.
What you bring to the role
5+ years professional software engineering experience with 3+ years building backend services (microservices/distributed systems).
Strong proficiency in Go (Golang) and Go testing practices; comfortable with containerized development using Docker.
Solid experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and designing efficient data access patterns.
Practical cloud experience (AWS preferred) and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code concepts.
Working knowledge of distributed systems concepts (consistency, timeouts/retries, backpressure) and patterns for reliable services.
Experience with event-driven architectures and message systems (Kafka or similar) and designing robust REST APIs and integrations.
Excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a focus on mentorship and continuous improvement.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with PHP/Laravel or working alongside PHP-based services.
Familiarity with analytical databases such as ClickHouse.
Experience with observability and error-tracking tools (Datadog, Sentry) and proactive monitoring practices.
Exposure to CI/CD tooling and orchestration (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Spinnaker, Kubernetes).
Our tech stack
Backend: Go, PHP, Laravel
Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Redux
Data & APIs: PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, Kafka, Redis, REST, GraphQL Cloud & Infra: AWS, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Spinnaker
